Norway Faces Energy Challenges as Snow Deficit Impacts Hydropower
Norway is experiencing a significant hydropower shortfall due to an unusually dry winter, which has resulted in the lowest snow reserves in two decades. This deficit is impacting the country's ability to generate electricity, as hydropower relies heavily on snowmelt to replenish reservoirs. The situation has led to reduced electricity exports to the UK and Germany, and increased power prices across the Nordic region. According to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, the snow deficit has created a 25 terawatt-hour energy shortfall, nearly a fifth of Norway's total hydropower output last year. The coldest winter since 2010, caused by high pressure near Greenland, has blocked moist Atlantic air, exacerbating the dry conditions.
