Solar Battery Lifespan Varies Significantly by Chemistry and Usage, Not Just Age
The lifespan of a solar battery can range from approximately 3 years to over 10 years, heavily depending on its chemistry, operating temperature, depth of discharge, charging conditions, and frequency of use. Flooded lead-acid batteries typically have a shorter lifespan, often around 3-5 years, while well-designed lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries can provide 10 to 15 years or more of practical service. Modern residential solar batteries generally are expected to last 10 to 15 years. Battery life is influenced by three main factors: the cycle clock (energy moved through the battery), the calendar clock (aging over time even when unused), and the reserve clock (whether the remaining capacity meets user needs). Factors that shorten battery life include high temperatures, repeated deep discharges (especially for lead-acid), chronic undercharging of lead-acid batteries, and poor cell balance or weak battery management systems in lithium batteries.
