Mississippi River Delta Captured in Stunning Radar Imagery
The European Space Agency (ESA) has released a vibrant radar image of the Mississippi River delta, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission. The image showcases the final stretch of the 3,766-km-long river as it flows through New Orleans, Louisiana, and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The delta, often referred to as the 'bird-foot' delta due to its unique shape, is a result of millions of years of sediment deposition. The radar imagery, taken between February and June 2026, highlights changes in the landscape over time, with different colors representing various periods. The wetlands in this region, formed by sediment deposits, are critical habitats for endangered species and play a vital role in protecting the mainland from severe weather events.
