Louisiana Health Officials Report Five Deaths from Flesh-Eating Bacteria Linked to Seawater Exposure
Louisiana health officials have reported an increase in cases of Vibrio vulnificus, a type of flesh-eating bacteria, with nine cases and five fatalities this year. The Louisiana Department of Health has linked all cases to wounds exposed to seawater, particularly in warm coastal waters where the bacteria thrive. The department has issued warnings to residents to take precautions, especially those with underlying health conditions, as the bacteria can cause severe infections, including gastrointestinal illness, wound infection, or blood poisoning. The bacteria are more prevalent from May to October due to warmer water temperatures.
