FDA-Approved Synthetic THC Shows Promise in Reducing PTSD Nightmares
A recent study published in Nature Medicine reveals that dronabinol, a synthetic THC medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has shown effectiveness in reducing the frequency and intensity of nightmares in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Conducted by German researchers, the study involved a randomized controlled trial with 171 adults, where participants received either dronabinol or a placebo over a 10-week period. Results indicated that 57.9% of those on dronabinol experienced a significant reduction in nightmares, compared to 29% on placebo. The study highlights the potential of dronabinol as a treatment option for PTSD-related nightmares, although it did not show improvements in overall PTSD severity or related depression.
