Cook County Medical Examiner Confirms Six Heat-Related Deaths Amid July Heatwave
Cook County has reported six heat-related deaths in July, marking the deadliest month for such fatalities in over a decade. The victims, most of whom were under 60, succumbed to conditions exacerbated by extreme heat, such as heat stroke and heart disease. The heatwave, with temperatures reaching the upper 90s and heat indexes over 100 degrees, has highlighted the ongoing threat of heat-related illnesses. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes that heat kills more people annually than any other weather-related disaster. The recent deaths include individuals with underlying health conditions, which made them more vulnerable to the heat.
