Geological Anomaly Beneath Connecticut Prompts New Research, Potential New York Region Impact
Scientists have identified a narrow column of unusually fast seismic wave travel beneath Connecticut, dubbed the 'Connecticut Fast Anomaly.' This feature is located next to the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, a larger region of unusually warm mantle beneath New England. The Northern Appalachian Anomaly is approximately 37 to 124 miles below the surface and is about 100 degrees hotter than surrounding material. Researchers at Yale University, led by Maureen Long, chair of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, are deploying 300 seismic instruments across northern Connecticut to study this phenomenon more closely. The anomalies' movements occur over millions of years, with mantle flow happening at a speed comparable to human fingernail growth.
