UN Security Council Initiates Straw Polls for Next Secretary-General Amid Global Challenges
The United Nations Security Council has commenced the process of selecting a successor to Secretary-General António Guterres, who is set to step down at the end of the year. The initial phase involves informal 'straw polls' among the 15 Council members to gauge support for the seven candidates from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Senegal, and Uganda. These non-binding votes allow members to express whether they 'encourage,' 'discourage,' or have 'no opinion' on each candidate. The process is expected to continue through the summer, potentially concluding in late September or early October, unless a consensus candidate emerges sooner. The current candidates include notable figures such as Rafael Grossi, Michelle Bachelet, and Macky Sall. The Security Council's decision will eventually lead to a recommendation to the 193-member UN General Assembly, which traditionally approves the appointment.
