Search Suspended for Missing Crew After Typhoon Near Northern Marianas
The search for five missing crew members of a cargo ship that overturned near the Northern Mariana Islands during Super Typhoon Sinlaku has been suspended. The ship, named the Mariana, lost its starboard engines and required assistance as the typhoon battered the Pacific island chain. The U.S. Coast Guard lost contact with the vessel shortly after the crew's distress call. Despite heavy winds hindering initial search efforts, the overturned ship was spotted on April 18, approximately 40 miles northeast of Pagan Island. The search, which lasted over 100 hours and covered an area larger than California, was halted after one crew member's body was recovered. Debris, including a partially submerged inflatable life raft, was found about 110 miles from the ship. The Coast Guard expressed condolences to the families and the Saipan community.
