Johnny Garcia Wins Texas Primary, Overcoming GOP-Linked Antisemitic Opponent
Johnny Garcia, a former sheriff’s deputy, has won the Democratic primary runoff for Texas' 35th Congressional District, defeating Maureen Galindo, who had been criticized for antisemitic remarks. Garcia secured 59% of the vote, according to the Associated Press. Galindo, a sex therapist, had previously made controversial statements about imprisoning 'American Zionists,' which drew condemnation from both her party and Jewish groups. Despite efforts by the Lead Left PAC, linked to Republicans, to support Galindo with nearly $1 million in spending, Garcia prevailed with backing from the Democratic Majority for Israel and other centrist groups. This victory positions Democrats to potentially win a district that was redrawn to favor Republicans.
