Study Reveals High Flood Risk for 17 Million on U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts
A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama highlights a significant flood risk for over 17 million people residing along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, utilized 16 different factors to assess flood risk, including geographic hazards, population density, and infrastructure vulnerability. The research incorporated data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and applied artificial intelligence tools to evaluate flood risks from Texas to Maine. The findings indicate that 17.5 million people are at 'very high' risk, while an additional 17 million are at 'high' risk. Notably, New York City and New Orleans are among the most vulnerable areas, with New York having 4.75 million people at the highest risk levels.
