USPS Expands Solar Energy Use to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is actively increasing its reliance on solar energy as part of its broader sustainability initiatives. During October's Energy Action Month, a federal government program promoting sustainability and efficiency, USPS highlighted its progress in adopting solar power. The organization utilizes power purchase agreements (PPAs) to acquire solar energy for some of its facilities, which allows third-party providers to own, operate, and maintain the solar generators, thereby avoiding significant upfront costs for USPS. Currently, five USPS facilities—two in California, and one each in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C.—are powered by these solar PPAs, with plans to implement seven more. This expansion has enabled USPS to surpass its goal of achieving 10 percent renewable energy consumption for fiscal years 2024 and 2025, with renewable sources now accounting for 13.3 percent of its total electricity consumption.
