Entomologist Dino Martins Highlights the Role of Parasites in Biodiversity
Dino J Martins, an entomologist and evolutionary biologist, is advocating for a greater appreciation of parasites in understanding biodiversity. His latest work, 'Hidden Creatures: Luscious Leeches, Bashful Botflies and the Wondrous, History-Shaping World of Parasites,' explores the role of parasites in ecosystems. Martins argues that parasites, often seen as villains, are crucial to biodiversity and extinction narratives. He emphasizes that understanding parasites can offer insights into ecosystems and potential medical therapies. Martins' work is based on his experiences with parasites in East Africa and other regions, highlighting their complex relationships with hosts and their role in natural selection.
