Consistent CPAP Use Linked to Reduced Depression Risk in Long-Term Study

A long-term study conducted in France has found a significant association between consistent use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy and a lower risk of developing major depressive disorder in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Researchers followed 2,712 CPAP users for a median of approximately 8.5 years. The study compared participants who used CPAP for at least four hours per night with those who used it less consistently. Among those who used CPAP consistently, 19.2% developed depression, compared to 24.2% in the less consistent group. After accounting for various factors such as age, sex, BMI, socioeconomic status, insomnia complaints, and initial depressive symptoms, consistent CPAP use was associated with a 17% lower risk of developing depression. This research suggests that treating OSA consistently may have mental health benefits beyond just improving sleep quality.
