North Korea Accused of Operating Secret Detention Facility in Beijing Embassy for Suspected Defectors
A Seoul-based human rights watchdog, the Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG), has released a report alleging that North Korea operates a secret detention facility in the basement of its embassy in Beijing. This 'black site' is reportedly used to detain, interrogate, and prepare for forced repatriation North Korean nationals suspected of attempting to defect. These individuals, who include diplomats, students, party officials, scientists, hackers, and overseas workers, are believed to possess sensitive information that could harm the North Korean leadership if disclosed. The TJWG claims that suspected defectors are sometimes lured to Beijing under false pretenses, have their passports and mobile phones confiscated, and are subjected to repeated interrogations for a minimum of one week to a maximum of one month.
