India's MNRE Clarifies No Halt on Renewable Energy Financing Amid Overcapacity Concerns
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has clarified that it has not issued any advisory to halt or pause financing for renewable energy projects. This clarification comes amid reports suggesting that financial institutions were advised to stop lending due to overcapacity concerns. As of October 2025, India's installed capacity from non-fossil sources is approximately 259 GW, with significant growth in solar PV manufacturing. The MNRE aims to make India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and a major player in the global value chain. The ministry is encouraging financial institutions to expand their portfolios to include upstream stages of solar PV manufacturing, such as solar cells and polysilicon, rather than focusing solely on solar module manufacturing.
