Oahu Nonprofit Papahana Kuaola Celebrates 20 Years of 'Aina-Based Learning and Environmental Restoration
Papahana Kuaola, an Oahu-based Native Hawaiian educational nonprofit, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The organization is hosting a Hoolaulea event on August 30 at its 63-acre site at Waipao in Heeia to mark two decades of environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community education. For 20 years, Papahana Kuaola has been dedicated to restoring what was once an illegal dump site into a native educational sanctuary. The nonprofit uses the 'aina (land) as a classroom, connecting children, families, and schools to Hawaiian culture through hands-on, place-based learning, native plant and stream restoration, and environmental education. This work aims to strengthen the pilina (relationship) between people and the land. The event will feature live entertainment, food, local craft vendors, educational booths, and cultural activities.
