White House Adviser Kevin Hassett Held Significant Coinbase Stake Amid Trump Administration's Crypto Policy Push
White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett held between $1 million and $5 million in Coinbase shares at the end of 2025, according to a newly released financial disclosure. This occurred while the Trump administration was actively developing cryptocurrency policy. Hassett had previously served as an adviser to Coinbase from 2021 until January 2025, when he joined the White House. Upon rejoining the administration, President Trump established a working group on digital asset markets within the NEC, tasked with creating recommendations for cryptocurrency regulation, banking, stablecoins, and taxation. Hassett stated he recused himself from crypto-related matters after consulting government ethics officials, and the White House confirmed his recusal remains in place, asserting his full compliance with ethical requirements. However, some ethics experts, like Virginia Canter of the Democracy Defenders Fund, have raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest or its appearance.
