Chesterton High Students Contribute to Porter's Environmental Commission
Two graduating seniors from Chesterton High School, Isabel Durkin and Devin Throw, have played significant roles in the town of Porter's Environmental Sustainability Commission. Established in September 2024, the commission benefited from the active participation of these students, who were treated as full members with equal voting rights. Durkin and Throw contributed to various initiatives, including the annual Earth Day Trash Pickup and discussions on environmentally friendly outdoor lighting ordinances. Durkin, who composed the commission's mission statement, also organized a presentation on raising monarch butterflies. Throw, on the other hand, conducted a detailed analysis of trash collected during Earth Day, presenting his findings to the Porter Town Council. Both students are set to pursue higher education, with Durkin heading to St. Mary's College to study neuroscience and Throw planning to attend Indiana University to major in international relations.
