Amnesty International Criticizes Portugal's Ban on Face Coverings for Human Rights Violations
Amnesty International has raised concerns over a new law passed by the Portuguese Parliament that bans face coverings in public spaces. The law, which was approved with a two-thirds majority, is seen as discriminatory by Amnesty International, particularly against Muslim women who choose to wear full-face veils. Joao Godinho Martins, Executive Director of Amnesty International Portugal, stated that the law violates the freedom of expression and religion, and could lead to social isolation and difficulties in accessing public services for women who wear veils. The law also impacts the right to privacy and freedom of assembly by prohibiting face concealment during demonstrations.
