Northern District of California Offers Free Legal Assistance for Self-Represented Litigants
The United States District Court for the Northern District of California provides free legal assistance to individuals representing themselves in civil cases, or those considering filing a civil case within the district. These services are offered through independent legal services organizations, not directly by the court. Attorneys can explain court procedures, legal rights and responsibilities, offer limited legal advice, assist with preparing simple court filings, and provide referrals to other services. However, these attorneys do not become the litigant's lawyer or represent them in court; individuals remain responsible for managing their own cases, including meeting deadlines and appearing at hearings. Eligibility generally requires that individuals do not already have legal representation. Specific restrictions apply based on location, such as services not being available to incarcerated litigants in San Francisco and Oakland, and certain case types being excluded in San Jose.
