Maine Farmers Face Flash Drought Amid Legislative Challenges
Maine farmers are experiencing extreme growing conditions, including a flash drought, which has prompted calls for legislative support. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has cut programs and grants that are crucial for the farming community, leading to increased pressure on local lawmakers to act. A proposed $45 million agriculture bond aimed at investing in agriculture, farming, and forestry programs has failed to pass through the Maine Legislature. Despite efforts to attach the bond language to another bill, LD 299, the House of Representatives voted down the enactment, leaving the bond in limbo. The Senate had previously passed the bond with bipartisan support, but the House's decision has stalled progress, with the bond potentially revisited during the Legislature's veto day on April 29.
