Hong Kong Firm Initiates Arbitration Against Maersk Over Panama Port Dispute
A subsidiary of Hong Kong's CK Hutchison Holdings has initiated arbitration proceedings against Danish logistics giant Maersk. The dispute centers around allegations that Maersk colluded with Panama to take over port operations at the Panama Canal. The Panama Ports Company, a unit of CK Hutchison, claims that Maersk undermined its contract to facilitate a takeover by a Maersk-affiliated operator at the Balboa terminal. This follows Panama's Supreme Court ruling that declared the company's concession to operate the ports unconstitutional, leading to the government's seizure of the Balboa and Cristobal ports. The arbitration will be held in London, and the Hong Kong firm has also filed claims against Panama, seeking damages exceeding $2 billion.
