Extreme Heat Leads to Critical Rescue on Camelback Mountain
A woman hiking Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, was critically injured due to heat stroke on Sunday morning, August 16, 2026. Phoenix Fire Department officials reported that the hiker was found halfway up the Echo Canyon Trail, severely overheated and unable to descend. Her core body temperature exceeded 104°F (40°C), and she exhibited signs of an altered mental state, both indicative of serious heat stroke. Emergency responders used a helicopter to airlift her off the mountain and initiated cold water immersion therapy at the trailhead before transferring her to a hospital. Temperatures in Phoenix are expected to exceed 110°F (43°C) throughout the week, prompting the City of Phoenix to close several hiking trails during peak heat hours as an Extreme Heat Warning takes effect.
