Edinburgh Introduces Tourist Tax to Fund Local Improvements, Sparking Debate
Edinburgh has implemented a new tourist tax, becoming the first city in Scotland to do so. The visitor levy, effective from Friday, adds a 5% charge to overnight stays in hotels, bed and breakfasts, and self-catering accommodations. The tax is expected to generate approximately £50 million annually, which will be reinvested in local services and facilities used by tourists and businesses. The City of Edinburgh Council approved the tax following the Scottish government's passage of the Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill in 2024. While the tax aims to fund improvements in housing, cultural initiatives, and public safety, critics argue it may deter potential visitors.
