Education Freedom Tax Credit Expands Scholarship Eligibility to 51.7 Million Children
A new estimate reveals that 51.7 million children are now eligible for the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC), a program designed to provide scholarships through a federal tax credit. The EFTC, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, offers a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit up to $1,700 for contributions to Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs), or up to $3,400 for married couples filing jointly. These SGOs use the funds to provide scholarships for education-related services. Currently, 31 states have opted into the program, covering 30.9 million eligible students, while 20.8 million eligible students reside in states that have not yet opted in. The program aims to bring private school choice to states lacking such options. The EFTC will take effect in 2027, and states must opt-in to become a 'covered state' to participate.
