The River Street Anthology, initiated in 2015 by Matt Jones, Director of the Center for Oral History, began as an effort to document local musicians in Ypsilanti following the closure of several music venues. Over four years, Jones recorded more than 600 tracks and captured over 1,000 photographs of musicians across Michigan, encompassing diverse genres such as hip hop, metal, folk, and Native drum circles. These recordings were made in various unconventional locations, including homes, libraries, churches, museums, and even a veterinary office. Researchers are collecting over 300 oral histories, documenting storytelling, music, worship traditions, and community archiving to understand how spiritual practices shape identity, belonging, and cultural memory across generations in Black communities. The team includes Isis Jones, director of REVIVAL, Neal Lester, a foundation professor of English at Arizona State University, and independent scholar Randy Nelson.

The urgency of the documentation and preservation efforts is driven by the imminent resumption of activity by the Philpott Dam, which would inundate the site with several feet of water.
