High Schooler Develops Plant-Based Plastic to Combat Microplastics
Arya Satheesh, an 18-year-old student, has invented Eco Purge, a plant-based biodegradable plastic designed to address the issue of microplastics in the environment. This innovative material degrades within two weeks, releasing enzymes that break down existing microplastics in soil and water. Satheesh's invention won the European category of the 2026 Earth Prize, earning her $12,500 to further develop her prototype. Despite challenges such as the high cost and accessibility of necessary enzymes, Satheesh is determined to bring her eco-friendly solution to market, aiming to reduce plastic pollution and its harmful effects on ecosystems.
