Methodist Hospital Identified for At Least $12.4 Million in Medicare Overpayments

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) conducted an audit of Methodist Hospital, revealing that the institution received at least $12.4 million in Medicare overpayments. This audit, part of a series examining hospitals with a high volume of claims identified as high-risk for noncompliance, focused on Methodist Hospital due to its substantial number of potentially high-risk claims submitted to Medicare. The OIG reviewed 100 inpatient and outpatient claims totaling $1,426,020. While the hospital complied with Medicare billing requirements for 73 of these claims, 27 claims did not fully comply, resulting in net overpayments of $256,926 between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021. The OIG estimated that out of the $62 million Medicare paid the hospital, at least $12.4 million constituted net overpayments for selected inpatient and outpatient services that failed to meet Medicare requirements during the audit period.
