USC Study Reveals Mediterranean Diet's Role in Protecting Heart and Brain
A recent study conducted by researchers at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology has uncovered a potential biological pathway through which a Mediterranean-style diet may influence aging. The study, led by Roberto Vicinanza, found that older adults adhering closely to the Mediterranean diet had higher blood levels of mitochondrial microproteins, humanin and SHMOOSE, which are linked to protection against cardiovascular disease and neurodegeneration. These microproteins, produced inside mitochondria, may act as molecular messengers that translate dietary intake into cellular function and aging processes. The Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, fish, legumes, and whole grains, has long been associated with reduced risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cognitive decline. This study suggests that specific components of the diet may directly influence mitochondrial health, offering a new understanding of its benefits.
