Understanding Lightning Strikes and Staying Safe
Lightning strikes are a significant weather hazard in the United States, with approximately 25 million cloud-to-ground strikes occurring annually. Lightning is generated when strong updrafts in storms carry water droplets high into the atmosphere, where they freeze and interact with downdrafts, creating a negatively charged storm base. This charge seeks out the positively charged ground, resulting in a lightning strike. Florida leads the nation in lightning-related fatalities, with 51 deaths over the past decade, followed by North Carolina with 11 and Virginia with three.
