Japanese Research Team Awarded $1 Million in XPRIZE Healthspan Competition for 'Super Exosomes'

A research team from Tohoku University and the University of Tokyo, led by Professor Keisuke Goda, has been named a Milestone 2 Awardee in the XPRIZE Healthspan competition, receiving a $1 million award. This global competition, spanning seven years, aims to incentivize the development of therapeutics that can restore muscle, cognition, and immune function in adults aged 50 to 90, with a goal of extending healthy life by 10 to 20 years within a year of treatment. The Japanese team's groundbreaking research focuses on 'super exosomes,' which are tiny natural particles chemically engineered with lanthanide ions to enhance their ability to target senescent cells. Senescent cells are aged or damaged cells that cease dividing but remain in the body, contributing to aging and age-related diseases. These super exosomes efficiently deliver regenerative molecular cargo, such as growth factors or genetic material, directly to aging tissues to promote repair.
