Nurse-Patient Mutuality Enhances Self-Care in IBD Patients, Study Finds
A recent study highlights the significant role of nurse-patient mutuality in improving self-care behaviors among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Conducted across nine Italian IBD centers, the research involved 440 adult participants, including those with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The study utilized the Nurse-Patient Mutuality in Chronic Illness scale to measure mutuality, which encompasses dimensions such as personal connection, mutual respect, and patient involvement in treatment decisions. Findings indicate that higher levels of mutuality correlate positively with self-care maintenance, monitoring, and management. Specifically, the 'developing and going beyond' dimension was linked to better self-care maintenance and monitoring, while 'deciding and sharing care' was associated with improved monitoring and management.
