Kamchatka Prepares for Internet Blackout Amid Undersea Cable Repairs
The Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia is set to experience a near-total internet shutdown due to maintenance on an undersea fiber-optic cable. The repairs, conducted by state telecommunications provider Rostelecom, are scheduled to begin at midnight local time on Wednesday and may last up to four days, depending on weather conditions. During this period, internet services, including mobile and home internet, messaging apps, and social media, will be unavailable. However, standard voice calls, SMS text messages, television broadcasts, and emergency services will remain operational. Critical infrastructure will switch to backup satellite connections to maintain essential services.
