Texas Senate Hopeful James Talarico's Past Sermon on Faith and Politics Draws Scrutiny
Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian and state representative, is facing scrutiny over a 2023 sermon titled “God is not a Christian,” where he criticized conservatives and defended abortion. In the sermon, Talarico argued that "God is so much bigger than our human categories. God is not a Presbyterian. God is not a Christian. God is not a noun at all. God is a verb. God is not a being. God is being self. God is love." He also decried Christian nationalism as a “cancer on our religion,” stating it turns Jesus into a “gun-toting, gay-bashing, science-denying, money-loving, fear-mongering fascist.” Talarico cited the overturning of Roe v. Wade, efforts to replace public schools with private Christian schools, and the January 6 Capitol riot as evidence of a push towards a "Christian theocracy." His spokesperson, JT Ennis, defended Talarico, stating he is a Christian seminarian dedicated to Jesus' teachings and fighting corruption.
