Philadelphia's Property Tax Crackdown May Have Missed Thousands of Fraudsters
Philadelphia's City Controller, Christy Brady, has released a report indicating that the city's recent property tax crackdown may have overlooked thousands of fraudulent cases. The report suggests that about 58,000 properties receiving the city's homestead exemption tax break may not be eligible, significantly more than the 22,000 properties reviewed by the city. The homestead exemption allows property owners to deduct the first $100,000 from their property's assessed value, saving homeowners up to $1,400 annually. The city has already removed over 13,000 ineligible property owners from the program, recovering $30 million in back taxes.
