The Freedom 13 Expands Nature Retreats for Veterans Nationwide
The Freedom 13, a non-profit organization founded by Mark Schmitz, is expanding its recreational camps for veterans and law enforcement personnel across the United States. The initiative was inspired by the loss of Schmitz's son, Jared, a Marine who died in a 2021 suicide bombing in Afghanistan. The camps aim to provide a healing environment for veterans and their families, offering a week in nature to improve mental health and build community connections. The organization plans to establish 50 retreats, one in each state, with 13 homes per site, potentially serving over 33,000 individuals annually. The first property was acquired in Bourbon, Missouri, where two homes have been built, with plans for 11 more.
