Researchers Use AI to Create Synthetic Viruses, Raising Biosecurity Concerns
Researchers from Stanford University and the Arc Institute have successfully used artificial intelligence to design and create synthetic viruses, specifically bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect bacteria. The AI models, Evo 1 and Evo 2, were trained to recognize patterns in DNA sequences, similar to how language models work with text. The study focused on bacteriophages related to the well-studied virus ΦX174, which infects E. coli but is harmless to humans. Out of 285 AI-designed genomes tested, 16 resulted in functional viruses capable of infecting bacteria. This development highlights the potential of AI in generative biology, where AI is used to design new biological molecules and organisms.
