Ivanhoe Mines Achieves Key Milestones in Platreef Mine Development
Ivanhoe Mines, a Canadian mining company, has announced the completion of significant development milestones at its Platreef mine in Limpopo, South Africa. The achievements include the construction of a four-million-tonne-per-year Shaft #3, the groundbreaking for the Phase 2 concentrator site, and the commencement of widening Shaft #2. These developments are part of the company's Phase 2 expansion, with future plans for a Phase 3 expansion. The Platreef mine is notable for its extensive orebody, which is significantly thicker than typical South African precious metal mines, allowing for mechanization and lower operational costs. The mine's production includes platinum, palladium, rhodium, copper, and nickel, all of which are considered critical minerals globally.
