Goleta Officials Consider New Regulations on Gun Sales Near Schools and Child Care Centers
Alarmed elected officials in Goleta and Santa Barbara County are pushing for new regulations to restrict gun and ammunition sales near schools and child care centers. This initiative comes as a Goleta gun shop, Goodland Guns, prepares to open next to a preschool. The Goleta City Council is set to discuss potential amendments to city zoning and land use laws that could impact the shop's operation, possibly leading to its closure. Concurrently, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal to establish a 1,000-foot buffer zone around preschools, K-12 schools, child care centers, parks, playgrounds, youth centers, religious establishments, and other gun shops. The county proposal also includes new security requirements for gun shops and a temporary 45-day moratorium on new gun shop approvals to allow time for permanent restrictions to be developed. Additionally, the board may require new gun shops to obtain a county conditional use permit, which would involve public input.
