Crescent City Offers Affordable Coastal Housing Amid Economic Challenges
Crescent City, a small town located about six hours north of San Francisco, is emerging as one of the last affordable coastal areas in California. With an average home price under $400,000, it stands in stark contrast to the high property costs in other coastal cities like Malibu or Santa Monica. Despite this, the affordability is relative, as local residents face economic challenges due to low wages and limited job opportunities. The median home value in Crescent City has more than tripled since 2000, making it difficult for locals to purchase homes. The town, which is surrounded by state and national parks, is also geographically isolated, with only two roads providing access, both of which are prone to closures due to storms and landslides. Efforts are underway to improve infrastructure, including a proposed $3 billion tunnel project to address these access issues.
