Fall Fire Season Begins in West Virginia, Ohio
The fall fire season has officially started in West Virginia and Ohio, bringing outdoor burning restrictions to both states. In Ohio, burning is prohibited daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. through November 30, while West Virginia enforces restrictions from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. until December 31. According to Anthony Edwards, deputy state forester for the West Virginia Division of Forestry, these hours coincide with the hottest and driest parts of the day, increasing fire risks. Evening hours see higher humidity levels, reducing the likelihood of fire spread. Additionally, West Virginia requires a 10-foot safety strip around burn areas, with all vegetation removed, and mandates that individuals remain present until all embers are cold.
