Students at the University of Mississippi have translated 13 World War I letters from French to English, uncovering a piece of history involving a French widow, Anna Laborde, and the Woman’s Book Club of Oxford, Mississippi. These letters, archived at the University of Mississippi Libraries, detail the experiences of a French family impacted by the war and the friendship that developed between women across continents. The translation project, undertaken by students in a graduate-level French translation class, revealed the cultural and historical context of the letters, demonstrating the value of a university education beyond immediate job market outcomes.
