Chicago Advances Office-to-Residential Conversions to Revitalize Downtown
Chicago has successfully completed its first office-to-residential conversion project in the Loop, transforming a 14-story building into 'The Bellwether,' which now offers 117 mixed-income residential units. This initiative is part of the city's broader 'LaSalle Street Reimagined' program, which aims to convert vacant downtown office spaces into residential housing. The city anticipates five additional conversions under this program, projected to create a total of 1,765 mixed-income units. Beyond these city-backed projects, nearly two dozen private office conversion developments are also underway, expected to contribute close to 4,000 residential units to the city's housing supply. This trend extends beyond Chicago, with similar conversions occurring in other U.S. cities.
