Russian Oligarch's Yacht Navigates Strait of Hormuz Amid Iranian Restrictions
A superyacht owned by Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz despite Iran's significant control over traffic in the area. The yacht, named Nord, valued at approximately $500 million, traveled from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, using a shipping lane deemed safe by Iran. This route is closer to Iran's coast and near Larak Island, controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Mordashov, chairman of Severstal, a Russian metals and mining company, is under U.S. sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage for global oil supplies, and Iran has historically threatened to block it if attacked. Recently, Iran has restricted shipping, citing a U.S. naval blockade as a violation of the ceasefire. Traffic through the strait has decreased, impacting oil and fuel prices.
