Cuban Immigrant's Death in ICE Custody Raises Concerns Over Detention Conditions
A Cuban immigrant, Denny Adan Gonzalez, died in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, with authorities suspecting suicide. Gonzalez, 33, was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead shortly after. His death marks the 18th in ICE custody within the first four months of 2026, following a record high of 31 deaths in 2025. Gonzalez had previously entered the U.S. legally in 2019 but was deported in 2020. He reentered illegally in 2022 and was detained by ICE in January 2026 after being arrested for assault and domestic violence. The Stewart Detention Center, operated by CoreCivic, has faced criticism for its remote location and alleged substandard medical care.
