Black Swan Records' Legacy: Marianna Johnson's 1921 Recordings Highlight Pioneering Black Artistic Achievement
Marianna Johnson, a Henderson, Kentucky native, recorded two songs, “The Rosary” and “Sorter Miss You,” for Black Swan Records in 1921. These recordings are now digitally available, offering a glimpse into the early 1920s Harlem Renaissance and the efforts of Black-owned record companies to promote Black artistic talent. Black Swan Records, founded by Harry H. Pace, aimed to showcase Black artistic achievement and business capability, releasing a diverse catalog that included blues, jazz, spirituals, popular songs, and concert pieces. Johnson's formal contralto performance on these records was accompanied by the Black Swan Symphony Orchestra, directed by William Grant Still, and linked her work to Fletcher Henderson during his early years at the label. Her vocal style, distinct from the blues often associated with early 'race records,' emphasized a formal concert approach, demonstrating Black musicians' versatility across American musical culture.
