Teen Dies from Heat-Related Illness on Grand Canyon Hike
An 18-year-old male hiker tragically passed away after experiencing symptoms of heat-related illness while hiking the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon. According to the National Park Service, the incident occurred on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time. The teen had ventured past Havasupai Gardens, a rest stop requiring a 3,000-foot descent from the canyon rim, and was attempting a round-trip day hike from the South Rim to the Colorado River. Park rangers launched a helicopter rescue operation and located the teen about 30 feet below the trail. Despite life-saving efforts, the teen could not be revived. The hike is known for its extreme temperature changes, long distances, and significant elevation changes, with the park service advising against attempting such strenuous hikes in a single day.
