Fort Wayne City Council Faces Division Over Proposed Homeless Resource Center Location
Fort Wayne City Council is experiencing division over the proposed location of the Anchor Resource Center, a facility aimed at aiding the homeless. The proposed site at 333 E. Washington Blvd has sparked debate, with concerns primarily focused on its proximity to St. Paul’s Lutheran School, approximately 800 feet away. While some residents, including school staff, support the center's mission, they express apprehension about the location due to safety concerns for children. Mayor Sharon Tucker addressed these concerns by consulting with the Fort Wayne Police Department, which reported no crimes against minors by homeless individuals in the area over the past three and a half years. Despite opposition, nine downtown organizations have expressed support for the center, emphasizing the need for such a facility in the community.
