El Niño May Bring Cooler, Stormier Winter to Florida
The Climate Prediction Center has forecasted an 81% chance of a 'very strong' El Niño developing by October to December 2026, with a 97% likelihood of it persisting through early spring 2027. While El Niño may reduce the number of Atlantic hurricanes during the 2026 season, it is expected to bring a cooler, stormier winter to Florida. The phenomenon alters the jet stream, pushing it south over the Gulf of Mexico, which can lead to increased turbulence and severe weather in the region. Historical data from past El Niño events, such as the 1997-1998 and 2015-2016 occurrences, highlight the potential for deadly tornadoes and significant property damage.
